Smudging for the New Year

Looking for a ritual to step into 2021 without any attachment to it?

Smudge after you take those decorations down! Because we are entering into a new year, it’s the perfect time to cleanse our homes, minds, and hearts of the residual negative energies of the past year.

Much like a bath for the body, smudging is an effective way to cleanse these sacred spaces of psychic pain and a good exercise to balancing your chakras!

Smudging is thousands of years old and is a historic ritual in Native American culture. I think it’s really important to acknowledge and understand the roots and history behind it, rather than just falling into something because it’s “trendy.”

Once your home is ready to be smudged after your decorations are put away and the surfaces are clean, select a smudge stick to light and blow out. (See samples in the photo).

Begin by walking around your entire house and allow the smoke to touch every room, corner, even closets, and cupboards.

Don’t worry, it’s not harmful smoke and isn’t dangerous for you or your pets. You can use a smudge dish or abalone shell to catch any falling ashes.

You can also use a cleansing mantra as you move through the house like these!

“Into this smoke I release all energy that doesn’t serve me, all negativity that surrounds me and all the fear that limits me.” – Asé

“I release all things from the past year that has caused any negative attachment. I prepare and welcome new changes, new lessons and new adventures. I welcome new opportunities to grow mentally and emotionally.” – Unknown

I don’t know if there is a big enough smudge bundle for clearing out 2020 — but this is a great start and a beautiful, healing ritual to step into a new year!
